Evelyn's and Harper's Rooms: Charity Project

In September 2019, a dream I’d had in my head and heart was finally coming to life. I’d always wanted to help others by using my design skills to enhance their living space - because what surrounds you matters. It was just an idea, not specific as to who or how, but I shared it with someone who challenged me to take action instead of just thinking and talking about it. Well… I finally did.

The idea quickly became crystal clear one night when I was scrolling through Instagram. I saw a post from Heather Roy, a woman I’d been following for some time. It wasn’t about the picture she posted or what she wrote. But I finally knew what I wanted to do. Heather’s daughter Evelyn has been battling cancer for some time and, because of my own personal experience with cancer, I knew instantly that I wanted to design and decorate bedrooms for Evelyn and her sister, Harper.

To understand my connection with childhood cancer, please check out my Instagram Story Highlights called “Evelyn’s Room”. In the video I very vulnerably shared my own story of how my sister died from cancer at 12 years old and asked for help from my followers to make this project happen! The goal of helping kids with cancer, and the siblings going through this is with them, is extremely close to my heart.

The help offered on this project was immediate and overwhelming! In fact, we had more offers than we could accommodate. We could not have pulled this off without the amazing Design and Instagram communities both here in YYC and other cities in Canada and we are so grateful.

With amazing help and support on this project, we were also able to surprise Heather and Mike with a small bedroom refresh of their own! Heather’s reaction to the surprise bedroom makeover was very emotional in the best way possible. I knew in that moment how much our work really does matter.

My dream going forward is to form a charity in order to help more kids going through childhood illnesses. Quite honestly, I wish there were no more kids to help, but sadly there are so many. I’d also love to attract large financial donations from big companies who likely want a tax receipt for their donation! More money would mean helping more kids. And what could be more important than that?

Heather reports that the girls are thrilled with their new rooms as are her and Mike. It was such an honour to to do this for them as they go through such a trying experience in life. We hope their beautiful spaces bring as much joy to them as it brought to us. Thank you for helping us do this.
