Lighting 101

There are many reasons to splurge on lighting. There’s something about an eye-catching wall sconce or a statement chandelier that can change your entire space. One of the ways we like to incorporate lighting is with a sculptural element that frames your space like a piece of art. The intent being to draw your eye up and utilize the space volumetrically. Good lighting often frames the space and grounds the furniture it is hanging above, anchoring it to the surrounding room.

As you can see above, changing the orientation of the bathroom vanity sconce allowed us to source the desired mirror size to make the most of the space. The sconce falls into line with other horizontal elements in the space resulting in a seamless end result. Another element we love to incorporate into the primary bedroom is swapping out bedside table lamps for wall mounted sconces. This adds interest and a beautiful layered element, especially when there is wallpaper behind. When it comes to ambient lighting in a sitting area, the scale of a table lamp should be closely considered. It should relate to the furniture around it and be tall enough that it looks substantial in the space. Studio McGee touches on the importance of layering your lighting in your home on their blog. It breaks down why it is important to have a thoughtful combination of Ambient, task and natural lighting in your space.

The streamlined chandelier in the first image above adds a subtly traditional element that’s been distilled to something more contemporary. This is a classic addition to any space as it frames it beautifully with clean lines. The drama imposed by a large scale fixture in a small room adds something so unexpected. We love considering scale when we select lighting whether it be in a powder room or over a dining table. Why not go big and make that impact you’ve always been dreaming of?

Traditionally, you might not think an island needs 6 pendants, but when they are a striking black and brass combo and a variety of eye-catching shapes, LOOK at the end result! (First picture above). This is the moment when your lighting breaks away from being solely functional and now behaves as sculptural art grounding your island or mirroring your linear dining table. Also, we never shy away from mixing metals and shapes, sometimes the end result is more impactful than expected.
