Our Calgary Interior Design Team

We get to know our clients really well throughout the design process, and over the past decade, the team has evolved and grown as we consistently strive to give you the best experience. With that said, it’s only fair to introduce ourselves and share some fun facts about the SCID team, including why we love what we do!

Our team is collaborative, so we work together and share in the progress of projects. We do, however, split up on large-scale projects so everyone can work in their area of genius. I’m a part of every project alongside Kim, our office manager and head of client care, to ensure you’re informed every step of the way and that no detail has been forgotten. You are also likely to meet one of these two wonderful ladies and fantastic designers, Kristen or Jennae.

To keep projects running on time and on track (not including external delays), we have weekly team meetings, in addition to daily communication and dialogue about job status and decisions that need to be made.

Kim is our secret weapon. In addition to ensuring the admin work is up to date, she deals with delayed shipments and products that may have arrived damaged. Organization is key, and you can often find Kim helping with the heavy lifting and cleaning up! When asked about a current design element she is drawn to, Kim is all about making a statement with black fixtures.

As for life outside the office, Kim enjoys going to Big Fish, known to have Calgary’s best Surf ’N’ Turf, and won’t turn down a refreshing Gin & Tonic at happy hour…she’s even convinced me to have them on occasion. As for Kristen, she’ll typically reach for the wine list, but could be tempted by cocktails with floral or citrus notes. Similar to Kristen, Jennae also prefers cocktails with unique flavour profiles, notably the “Honey Bee” from 3 Bears in Banff…a bit of a trek, but we all know a day in the mountains is worth it.

Kristen and Jennae are in charge of all things design-related when selecting interior finishes, furniture, fabrics, lighting, and plumbing fixtures; they also create 3D renderings of the interior concept after floor plans are finalized. Kristen considers this to be an important step in project development and enjoys both creating the drawing set in AutoCAD and modeling the new space in SketchUp. These drawings address various design challenges within the project scope, while making it easier to visualize changes being made. You can see how newly selected finishes fit within the overall concept, including the scale of architectural elements, furniture, lighting, and fabric patterns or textures, as well as the relationship between these items.

Jennae says, while it can feel mundane in the moment, documentation is an incredibly important part of our process as well. It’s worth taking the extra couple of minutes to make sure everything is thoroughly recorded and filed. As we have many projects on the go, all of which are at different stages, it is key to ensure information is properly documented in a place where the whole team can access it and be notified of changes. In the long run, it saves everyone time and the client money.

When in the design library, Jennae looks forward to experimenting with colour, extending to colour blocking with paint, tile and grout, and fabrics. Give her all the options - but preferably in jewel tones.

If you didn’t already know, interior designers run on coffee and we’re no exception. If Kristen is in charge of the coffee run you can almost guarantee she’ll be running into Deville, and if Jennae’s making the stop, it’ll probably be from Alforno - with a few delicious treats as well.

As for my role, I wear many hats as lead designer. I’m the team manager and the main point of contact for all clients and projects. While I have an incredible team that I’m able to delegate tasks to, I do all the overseeing. I work on business development, social media, and managing all aspects of our projects at every phase.

I think each stage of the design process is important, but the first call and consultation rank higher on the list. Interior design is such a personal reflection of who lives in the home, so it’s important to see if we’re the right fit. This allows the opportunity for me to ask plenty of questions and hear all of your ideas. This first point of contact also allows an opportunity for education and time to set expectations.

At the consultation, we try to get a good sense of the style and design direction our clients are looking for. We want to hear everything you have to tell us and absorb as much detail as possible. It's our very first time seeing your home and our first chance to ask you everything we need to know, so we will often document the conversation and refer to those notes throughout the entire project.

What I am currently drawn to in interiors are the warmer earth tones, and it's making me want to do a total redesign in my home!

My challenge will be to incorporate them into my current design which is on the cooler side. However, my kitchen has open shelves, so I’ll be buying some new accessories that have natural elements, like pottery, concrete, and warm wood. I also plan on adding jewel-toned pillows and a warm cognac leather ottoman, as well as changing out my draperies for a warmer fabric. With that being said, perhaps I should give Kristen and Jennae the keys to my house and see what they come up with!

Once a project is complete, I like to celebrate! Like Kristen I typically choose a glass of wine over a cocktail, especially if we’re heading over to Notable. My husband and I love going here for dinner and always get the crab and lobster dip with GF crostini and the mussels and frites (with GF bread for dipping in the broth). This meal never fails to please and we love the moody vibe!

There’s one final thing we need to address… we are all glued to our phones, so what if we could only use one emoji for the rest of our lives (or at least the battery life) - and what would it be?

Kim: 🤗

Kristen: 😊

Jennae: 🤫

Stephanie: 🤣
