Design Customized for You

During our first meetings we often get clients who say something along the lines of “it’s just never felt like me” Sometimes they know the reasons why and other times they can’t put their finger on it. Our job is to first: diagnose the problem and second: help you find a solution that is customized to your lifestyle.

When we first met with our Bearspaw clients they were clear about wanting a feature around their central staircase. They wanted to make something interesting out of it, a unique conversation piece that would take their home to the next level. Over the coming weeks, together we designed the wood slat feature you can see in the image below. The entire process from beginning to end was a labour of love and collaboration with various trades and the end result is a showstopper! It frames the space beautifully, draws your eye and adds a modest warmth. It also acts as a privacy screen to better separate an otherwise very open concept. It creates some privacy from the entry of the home and draws you into the main living space. According to Architectural Digest, wood partitions are “the royalty of room dividers”!

We started with concept images, which then became sketches and after many meetings on site and with extensive input from the contractors and talented trades, we drew up some elevations in order to quote the feature and figure out material quantities.

After the initial elevations were done and materials were approved by the client we moved on to drafting detailed drawings of the exposed bracket and post detail at the top of the wood slats. Then we received a mockup for client approval that we have pictured below.

Once construction started we got to see the design we had so carefully detailed come to life and it turned out even better than we hoped! We visited the site often to ensure things were moving along and the client was happy with the outcome.

One of the most important elements of pulling this design together for our client was the collaboration process. As designers we love to dream up big ideas and beautiful designs but without the expertise of the contractor and trades during this process our design never would have left the paper. From making sure it was structurally sound to physically bringing it to life, the process was collaborative from beginning to end. We are so thankful or our talented connections in the industry.

In the end the client was overjoyed with how the stair feature turned out and thrilled that the design was custom to her home and style. These detailed elements of a project can sometimes be the most rewarding part. If you are feeling like your home is missing something, let us know what it is here and we would be happy to work with you on incorporating custom elements into your renovation.
