Drapery 101 by Calgary Interior Designer
When it comes to finishing off your renovation so that your home feels cozy, inviting and well… finished, we cannot say enough about the impact of custom drapery. The “made for your space” look is unparalleled and that’s why we are going to push you a little outside your comfort zone when it comes to drapery. Whether you want to make a bold statement or want to subtly add pattern, custom drapes are guaranteed to finish off your home AND make you happy. We promise!
While everyone is familiar with well known brands such as Hunter Douglas window coverings and Lutron motorized shades, one of our favourite ways to bring some dimension to your home is with patterned draperies. Tall panels of geometric or floral patterns or anything in between are a lovely way to frame a space perfectly. Patterned drapery with a dark wall colour will also to brighten up your space in unexpected ways. The middle photo above features stunning blue silk drapery against a shimmery tone on tone cream floral wallpaper and the contrast is breathtaking. Most people tend to default to blinds or shades and not everyone wants bold silk drapery but the statement it made in our Elbow Park Project is beautiful.
As well, we love a sheer and we often find the kitchen or eating nook is the perfect place for it, filtering natural light beautifully without blocking it completely. A fun twist on a classic sheer is to go dark, because why not? A dark sheer fabric adds depth to your space without actually darkening it, it’s unique and beautiful when the light hits it.
In some cases neutral is best and you can NEVER go wrong with white, off white or cream drapery. While the fabric sample we show you may seem simple and unassuming at first glance, once it is carefully pleated by our insanely talented work room, steamed and hung on your striking new drapery rod, it is amazing. Every time we install custom cream draperies we are shocked by how timeless they are. There may be times that off the shelf window coverings will suffice, but there really is nothing like custom.
When it comes to installing drapery hardware we have many options. Shown on the top right is a ceiling mount that rounds each corner from the eating nook to the living room. When they are closed it creates a soft wall to wall look that adds privacy and warmth in the evening. We also have the option to hang a track, and with the perfectly pleated fabric in front, the track fades away as you can see above on the bottom right.
Hopefully this gives you some insight into why we love custom draperies so much and why you shouldn’t hesitate to incorporate it to your renovation as the perfect finishing touch.
