Design Details

We’re sure you’ve seen different types of Flat Lay’s on Instagram - showing anything from design selections, baking, shoes or clothing, even books (called a Bookstagram in case you’ve never heard that before!).

Flat lays are a great (and fun!) way to communicate your aesthetic intentions.

Flat lays are one visual element commonly used in the world of Interior Design.  They are eye-catching arrangements, created physically or digitally, used to showcase the various material selections and design elements curated by us as the designers. Flat lays are captured from a bird's-eye perspective which allows us to properly pay attention to spacing, balance, and scale.

It is our job as designers to ensure our flat lays are deliberate, aesthetically pleasing, and enhance the overall vision of the project. You should be able to look at the flat lay and see a clear tie to the project’s design through the various materials, textures, patterns, and colors.

The following flat lays were created for this teen basement bath (as seen in the March 2024 issue of Style At Home.. ahem!)

The flat lay below is a digitally generated design - and while it communicates the intent and shows a clear connection to the space, there are times when digital flat lays can fall, well, flat.

We prefer handmade flat lays as there is something more unique and personal about it! When we hand-craft a flat lay, we're not just arranging objects, we're infusing it with passion, creativity, added depth and personality!

Because this was for a bathroom, we didn’t include some of the elements that we love to use in our flat lays like fabrics or wood flooring which tend to add a bit more personality and warmth.

We definitely consider using physical flat lays for client presentations to be important.  Clients are given the opportunity to  touch and feel the properties of fabrics and materials and clearly visualize the color palette and how the proposed selections are relevant to the space. We want to make sure our clients have a better, quicker understanding of the vision and are given the opportunity for any feedback and collaborative discussion! We love to hear your thoughts once we’ve explained our design to you!

Visual communication is an Interior Design superpower and flat lays are just one important element of our design process at SCID that can help the overall vision, direction for the project, and final design come to life!
